Southern Pines

Project Type

Mural

Date

2022

Location

Southern Pines, North Carolina

This one was inspired by the first film ever of a horse running by Eadweard Muybridge. The goal was to make a piece that was contextual to Southern Pines while prompting people to visualize the experience of time in motion.

Quantum physics has proven that our experience of time is a bit of a fallacy- everything is in fact happening now in the ever present moment. Our mind is what creates the experience of time, recreating and rewriting the memories of the past “self” and transposing them and projecting them into the future.

With this In mind, the question becomes - how can we consolidate our energy to live consciously aware of as many present moments as possible without the drag of the past and, in turn project ourselves into a more beautiful future?

Playing off this- the central “present tense” horse is the most defined covered with symbols inspired by Age of Enlightenment painter Gustav Klimt who used his patterns to visualize the merging of the individual with the cosmos. The patterns were also inspired by ceremonial imagery of indigenous tribes found around the world describing a higher order. Overall the patterns are meant to encourage the recognition of our macro-micro relationship with the planet and beyond. The left most horse is an aberration, loosely resembling the dragon or feathered- serpent Quetzalcoatl. He was known to the Aztecs as the creator being that brought wisdom and an enlightened future to the people of ancient mexico. This story is a narrative that can be found at the roots of many ancient cultures around the world.
The birds carry red threads as they fly to the nest of the future. The strings unravel becoming strands of DNA, a pair of keys are draped from the yellow canary’s thread further emphasizing that one of the keys to health sits in the present moment. In a nod to Dr. Bruce Lipton work, if we can manage to down-regulate our nervous systems and come into homeostasis, we can ultimately optimize how our genes express more favorably for health and well being.

The more we can recognize and appreciate the full spectrum experience of this life in the present moment, the more we can savor the beautiful gift we are given to be alive.
