I recently received a message recounting a woman who went to visit this piece & met a young boy while on site. She asked the young boy what he thought the piece meant: the two children layered on top of the face, with the eyes framing them. His immediate response was “ Children are our future, we need to see the world through their eyes.”

If I could give everyone a gift it would be to see the world through fresh eyes, a child’s eyes.

What would you do? How would you act differently?

Much like a Rorschach test, the time we live in has many different interpretations. The work is meant to encourage you to question your vantagepoint. Where are we making assumptions & how can we shift our stance? Growth can only happen when we open ourselves to an alternative perspective.

We complicate things as adults. The world especially now is pushing many of us to our limits, confronting our morals, ideals, & resilience. Many of us are entrenched in our belief systems, habits, what were taught, & what we have adopted as truths. We justify, we pressure ourselves & society pressures us to operate within an organized system. The reality of today is demanding us to take a closer look at everything we have taken for granted, overlooked, & ignored. To stand for what is in our hearts & call in the reality we deserve.

The piece is meant to challenge us to continue to find hope. To try & show us all amidst the turmoil & polarity what really matters. To see the soul that resides in every human being & remind us that we were all children once. To be good & moral people, & do our best to find empathy for others.

Representation matters. Its important that Black children see images that look like them in public imagery. On buildings & billboards. We are all responsible to foster the infinite potential that children possess. To give them permission to dream bigger so they can shape a brighter future. Its our duty to lead by example & find ways to support our kids so they can continue to spread their wings and feel limitless.

We have to help the next generation envision a better more loving world.
