Philosopher in the Eyes
Project type
Mural
Date
2019
Location
Mint Museum
This painting was largely inspired by the work @affectiva_emotionAI is working on to bring emotional intelligence & empathy into the digital world.
The young woman featured in the mural is captivated by the mobile device in her hand. Upon her face is placed a contemporary facial grid system that is measuring her emotional state based on her facial expressions.
As computers with advanced Artificial Intelligence systems are studying our emotional reactions, large data frameworks are being compiled into what could be called a personality. Or what perhaps makes us humans and not robots. This facial expression recognition technology is not at the science fiction story level yet, but it’s getting closer than ever.
Will we ever take pause to decide how that could shape the future of Charlotte in the story of tech culture?
The reflections of Julius Caesar and Nero in her eyes thematically reframes the conversation between machine learning and human beings.
Will AI technology look back at humanity as Caesar looked at Brutus in betrayal, or conversely will AI play the role of the misguided emperor Nero staring back at the city of Rome burning?
